With tax season just around the corner, Google search data are beginning to show some interesting trends for professional accountants. With the personal tax filings due in April, and the corporate deadline in June, we observe strong seasonality in searches for keywords like “tax accountant near me” and “accounting firms near me”. Unsurprisingly, these keywords tend to spike along with the tax filing deadlines. What is surprising is the length of time these keywords experience a spike in search engine activity. The graph below shows the rise in search activity for the keyword “tax preparer near me”. The keyword begins to spike and November/December and peaks in March/April.
This trend has been pretty consistent going as far back as Google historical data is available (in this case September 2021). In addition to the seasonality, you can see that there is a general upward trend in the search volume each year. When we did a deeper dive, we noticed that high volume keywords related to accountant searches have experienced significant growth since 2021. ‘Tax preparation services near me’ grew by 482%, while accounting firms near me grew by 248% and tax filing near me grew by 229%.
